The Role: Database Developer/Manager for NSW Brain Cancer Biobank Linkage

An exciting opportunity is available for an experienced database developer/manager to work with clinicians and research scientists to harmonise existing and prospective biospecimen and clinical data collections to facilitate high impact brain cancer translational research.

  • 1 year fixed term with possible extension 

  • Full time (40 hours per week)

  • Based at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse, Camperdown

Key responsibilities and activities: The customisation and implementation of a secure, web-based databank (REDCap) to link existing data collections and allow future data capture strategies to be aligned across multiple sites (SLHD, NSLHD and HNELHD)

Specifically, this database specialist will:

  • Consult with key stakeholders to consolidate a data dictionary comprising a range of health and biospecimen parameters.

  • Tailor data collection instruments, including the use of smart variables, branching logic, linkage of longitudinal repeating instruments, and other customisations, to create a final database template. 

  • Test and implement a customised database at multiple sites, including training of local staff in standardised data entry.

  • Develop templates for migrating and integrating existing data archives into the new database.

  • Develop templates for linking new data capture interfaces, including synaptic reporting fields and other clinical front sheets.

  • Adapt site-specific data collection instruments that allow parallel data capture for related investigator-driven projects at different sites

  • Facilitate linkage to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) held datasets including NSW Central Cancer Registry and Death registrations.

  • Develop standardised, routine database reporting and an assessment framework that routinely reviews data-quality and identifies areas needing intervention and adjustment/improvement. 

About the successful candidate:

  • Have knowledge and experience in the health industry, including previous experience with patient administration and/or clinical information systems.

  • Have extensive knowledge of database architecture and best practices in database management; demonstrated proficiency with REDCap development and management will be highly regarded. 

  • Have an intuitive approach to design reliable and user-friendly data capture strategies

  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills

  • Exceptional organisational skills and attention to detail.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
